I took a long weekend here, heading up to Cabezon Peak Thursday and Friday to work on the charcoal drawing, yesterday and today carving out the lino sheet.
The drive up to the peak was beautiful - the landscape green. The mesas and ridges orange, red, rust colored, yellow and white. Cabezon Peak rises up, higher and higher as you approach it like an immense cathedral - awesome, truly. I could hear Wagner's Vorspiel from Parsifal, or music from Mahler's Erster Teil from his 5th Symphony. It was still there, only occasionally hearing an insect. I only saw my footprints. I set up my wooden easel, chair. There is truly an energy, a lifeforce in nature. A landscape is not just dirt, stones, some grass and a few trees. There is a real spirit inhabiting the earth. It is there. Even in the quiet stillness of midday, the landscape is moving, changing, it has an organic growth. I believe I have captured that in my carving and infused it with my own internal energy. Both are there. In carving I have started below, at the lower right hand side and am working my way up, from the core, expressing myself outward. I'm really pleased with the progress made. I'll definitely have a print by June. July I'll head out again to draw out the second print, start the process all over again.
